Cherice Montgomery, Ph.D.
Short Bio:
Cherice Montgomery (Associate Professor of Spanish Pedagogy) coordinates the Spanish Teaching Major Program at BYU. Her work explores the potential of creativity, design-based pedagogies, and 21st century literacies for inspiring change in world language education. Cherice’s current research investigates the nature and design of compelling learning experiences in immersive contexts such as Dual Language Immersion (DLI), Playable Case Study simulations (PCS), and Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL). She has published in journals such as Foreign Language Annals, Die Unterrichtspraxis, Journal of Critical Inquiry into Curriculum and Instruction, and The Language Educator. Cherice has been honored with several awards for excellence in teaching, including the UFLA Higher Education Teacher of the Year, the Douglas K. Christensen Teaching & Learning Faculty Fellowship, the ACTFL-NYSAFLT Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education, and the BYU Faculty Women's Association Teaching Award. When she is not working, Cherice can be found birdwatching, cooking, or West Coast Swing dancing.
Long Bio:
Cherice Montgomery is an Associate Professor of Spanish Pedagogy at Brigham Young University. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum, Teaching, and Educational Policy with an emphasis in Learning, Technology, & Culture from Michigan State University, a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and a B.A. in Spanish (both from Wichita State University). Dr. Montgomery's research explores the potential of creativity, design-based pedagogies, and 21st century literacies for inspiring change in world language teacher education, teacher preparation, and professional learning. She is currently working on grant-supported research that investigates the nature and design of compelling learning experiences in immersive contexts such as: (1) Dual Language Immersion (DLI), (2) online, Playable Case Study simulations (PCS), and (3) Project-based Language Learning (PBLL). She has published in journals such as Foreign Language Annals, Die Unterrichtspraxis, the Journal of Critical Inquiry into Curriculum and Instruction (JCI~>CI), and The Language Educator.
Dr. Montgomery currently coordinates the Spanish Teaching Major Program at Brigham Young University, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in language teaching methods, assessment, biliteracy development, and technology. She has been honored with several awards for excellence in K-16 teaching, including the Utah Foreign Language Association (UFLA) Higher Education Teacher of the Year Award, BYU's Douglas K. Christensen Teaching & Learning Faculty Fellowship, the ACTFL-NYSAFLT Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education, the BYU Faculty Women's Association Teaching Award, the Kansas Foreign Language Teacher of the Year Award, and the U.S.D. 259 Good Apple Award.
Cherice’s professional endeavors include service on the Advisory Board of the National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, work on the Executive Planning Committee for the 9th International Conference on Immersion and Dual Language Education, and as a facilitator of grant-funded summer institutes, workshops, and webinars for language teachers. Dr. Montgomery has also served as co-chair of the ACTFL Pimsleur Research Award Committee, as a member of the New Visions in Foreign Language Education Task Force, and as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Critical Inquiry Into Curriculum & Instruction. When she is not working, Cherice can be found birdwatching, cooking, or West Coast Swing dancing.
