GiftednessThere are a variety of reasons that gifted learners may underachieve. These include fear of failure, fear of negative social consequences, perfectionism, and lack of interest, self-confidence, and/or study skills.
Gifted learners generally thrive on complexity, intellectual challenge, novelty, and opportunities to express themselves creatively. Due to their depth of knowledge, diverse interests, and inclination twoard synthesis, they may have trouble narrowing the scope of their efforts or completing tasks in a timely fashion (if at all). Gifted learners may also be highly sensitive to criticism, and may need encouragement to take risks, participate in experiences outside their comfort zones, persevere through tasks that are difficult for them, and overcome negative mindsets. |
