Workshop Description: Designing proficiency-oriented instruction for diverse learners struggling to find relevance in school is a challenge complicated by remote instruction. This session integrates social-emotional learning, play pedagogies, and project-based engagement to empower students to use the target language to explore, express, and empathize with their world.
Workshop Content: The uncertainties of today create mental and emotional challenges for teachers and learners. Students' experiences in school are even more disconnected from their real lives than before, and remote instruction has added yet another layer of difficulty for language teachers. This session demonstrates design principles and proficiency-oriented activities that empower diverse learners to embrace uncertainty, cultivate empathy, and take personal action. The session models concrete strategies that create a sense of physical and social presence in remote environments to support students' mental, social, and emotional needs. The practical strategies shared are based on research on immersive language learning experiences conducted in three K-16 in-person and remote contexts. Learning Outcomes: 1) I can build EMPATHY by integrating social-emotional learning strategies into my language activities. 2) I can EMPOWER learners by embedding choice and voice, authentic self-expression, and sustained inquiry into my lessons. 3) I can ENGAGE learners in remote language learning by prioritizing physical, social, and emotional interaction.
