Session Description: Dual Language Immersion (DLI) teachers must develop target language and literacy skills while helping learners understand academic content. This session demonstrates interactive, inquiry-based activities that develop 21st century skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity by strategically integrating language arts and science in 4th grade DLI classrooms.
Purpose: The purpose of the session is to demonstrate how teachers can combine culturally authentic children’s literature, cooperative learning techniques, inquiry-based interactive activities, and simulations to teach language arts and science content in a more integrated, contextualized, and engaging way. The session is based on research findings from 4th grade dual language immersion classrooms in Utah. Session Outcomes: 1) I can strategically select, sequence, and scaffold culturally authentic narrative texts to develop learners’ understanding of science concepts. 2) I can use interactive, inquiry-based science activities and simulations to contextualize learners’ language and literacy development. 3) I can use 21st century skills to facilitate student engagement and support comprehension of both language and content |
