Session Description: Designing and differentiating learning experiences for learners struggling to find meaning in school is challenging. Come experience multiple interactive strategies for cultural inquiry, collaborative critical thinking/problem-solving tasks, and hands-on creative self-expression activities that develop intercultural communicative competence. Content and Purpose: In a globalized world filled with increasingly complex problems, teaching can be a challenge—especially when learners are apathetic about school, lack motivation for learning, and struggle to comprehend abstract academic content due to limited target language and literacy skills. This session demonstrates principles for designing compelling learning environments and experiences that are drawn from several different empirical studies on integrating language, content, and culture. The session integrates multiple texts, tasks, & tools with play pedagogies, 21st century skills, and PBLL to develop intercultural communicative competence. Session Learning Outcomes: During the session, participants will: 1) Explore environments that engage learners in sustained cultural inquiry 2) Experience collaborative critical thinking and problem-solving tasks 3) Engage in concrete, hands-on activities that foster intercultural competence and creative self- expression for a variety of languages and levels |
