Giftedness
Definition: “Gifted individuals are those who demonstrate outstanding levels of aptitude (defined as an exceptional ability to reason and learn) or competence (documented performance or achievement in top 10% or rarer) in one or more domains. Domains include any structured area of activity with its own symbol system (e.g., mathematics, music, language) and/or set of sensorimotor skills (e.g., painting, dance, sports)" ~ National Association for Gifted Children (Click here for more definitions)
Statistics: "According to the Office of Civil Rights within the U.S. Department of Education, in 2011-12 there were approximately 3.2 million students in public schools in gifted and talented programs" (National Association for Gifted Children)
Approximately 6.7% of all children enrolled in public schools in the United States are enrolled in programs for the gifted and talented (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2014) Approximately 19% of the children enrolled in Utah public schools have been identified as gifted (National Association for Gifted Children, 2013-2014) |
